1. Building Construction Technology
1.1 INTRODUCTION
Building Construction is the application of knowledge and skills in the assembly and erection of structures, primarily those used to provide shelter. Since a house is one of the basic needs of human beings, the building construction industry covers more than 50 % of the construction sector. Building Construction technology is one of the departments under Civil Technology Faculty in Federal TVT Institute and trains students with two main targets or objectives:
· To train students to be trainers in TVT institutes throughout Ethiopia and
· To train students to be practitioners in construction industries.
The curriculum contains three important aspects of Building construction; Design, Technology and Management. In taking courses under these main aspects the department expects that graduates will have the capacity to design, construct and manage at least medium rise buildings of any occupation.
• In design students learn to generate ideas for design, read and interpret architectural designs and make analysis to prepare structural designs.
• In Construction management students learn to plan, monitor, supervise and control building projects with the aim of accomplishing it with the planned time, budget, and quality requirements.
• In Technology students learn to construct buildings according to planned design and quality requirements. At this stage students are exposed to practical tasks which cover almost more than 50% of the total class time.
The department delivers 1st and 2nd degree programs in the regular, summer and extension modalities
1.2 Mission of the Department The mission of the Building Construction Technology Department is Producing competent, innovative and resourceful higher education teachers, Technicians and leaders through the provisions of quality short term and long –term program and quality of education sectors, carry out quality technology research through active involvement of technical and vocational educational and training teachers, leaders and stakeholders in support of the MSEs, ensuring quality and sustainable institutional development, providing demand driven community and consultancy services, ensuring continuous engagement with industry and foreign institutions and higher educations in the development of higher education teachers, leaders and technicians,
